  • fritz Says -> sarvesh birthday treat at martins corner

Sarvesh’s birthday is on the 23rd of November.
so he had said that this year the treat will be at martins corner and must say he did keep his promise he left pune on 22nd reached goa 23rd morning and after that in the afternoon we met and went for a nice fish curry rice at city pride.
on the next day there were two more people touching down in goa satya and abhimanyu
so over the lunch we had our normal chit chat discussing about usual stuff our lives, technology, friends, good eating out places for fish etc etc
so after the lunch sarvesh headed home to get some much needed sleep since he was sleep deprived because of traveling the previous night.
I got back to my work in the office and then next day we were all suppose to go to martins corner sarvesh, fonda, satya, abhimanyu and me.

Fast forward to next day I get a call from satya saying his bus is slow and that he has still not reached goa and that he might reach goa a bit late and will then inform us about his lunch plans. I have a early meeting next day i wind it up by 1 and am back to the office sarvesh comes to pick us up at the office and then we head off and we have not heard from satya yet who was suppose to reach goa that very morning so we call him up he says bus was delayed and he has just reached home and that he wont be able to make it for the lunch and that he will meet us in the evening.

So on the way we have to pick up abhimanyu and saurabh both of whom are down to goa to collect their transcripts from the college since they are both headed to the US for higher studies they recently answered the GRE and scored pretty well on it so we pick them up from their college at PCCE and there is all sorts of confusion at this point will the kitchen be closed at martins corner and what will be our back up plan etc etc etc and all this time am cool because I know the kitchen wont be closed :)

Finally after a long drive and missing quite a few accidents on the way yes sarvesh was driving and even though he was not drunk he still tends to be a hopeless driver hahahaha
finally we are at martins corner it is a bit quite and less people are there because we are a bit too late for lunch but well we place our order
we had martins special mocktail since everyone was ordering those even i decided to go with that instead of my usual order for some refreshing beer. then we had some starters fried mussels, french fries, squid calamari and then we moved onto main course most of them ordered chicken pepper steak and I ordered myself some nice roast tongue (must admit I left 2 small pieces of it though as I was full with the mocktail and the starters) and over the lunch our conversation was mostly about tech since we were all techies there and am sure all this talk must have bored my bro hahahaha.

After we finished lunch we just lazied around a bit sitting there then we decided to take the long drive back to panaji on the way we just filled petrol and then got in touch with satya and told him to meet us at CCD miramar so on the way there we dropped fonda back to office and then we headed to CCD to lazy around some more :)
there also we talked about many things like google , interesting opportunities in video startups etc etc and then finally satya showed up and then we had a good time pulling his leg because of his recent US trip then we talked about work there and here how it is different etc etc and then finally we all decided to head our separate ways but before that sarvesh had to pick up some cashew nuts for his office colleagues since he was leaving for pune the next day and he wanted to pick up some stuff from the dollar store too and he was not the only one who picked up stuff from dollar store even i picked up a can opener needed one for the office pantry and abhimanyu picked up some stuff too am sure he could not help it as he is a real shopaholic ( yes he is sick and needs help he spends a hell of a lot of money on shopping so all of us should start praying for him to get well soon )

After that shopping spree it was time to call it quits for the day and I headed back to the office to get some work done and some surfing done :)

well about martins corner I don’t think we will be heading there in the near future since we need to find another place to check out but the food and the rates there are both good but till we go there again am still trying to figure out another place to sample when all of us meet again in december maybe it will be chef fernandos :)

For the past couple of days there is only one question on my mind is it possible to build a company worth 1 billion dollar in 3 years yes 36 months now don’t ask me how I got the magic numbers of 1 billion or 3 years but I guess the reason for such crazy questions going in my mind are the number of interviews I see on TV of entrepreneurs and new generation of business leaders in the making taking over family run businesses in India after their studies saying that their targets are to take their family businesses past the 1 billion dollar mark and make the business more professionally managed and not family run.

Hmm all this has certainly got me thinking is it possible to build a company in a small place like goa worth a billion dollars in 3 years well maybe it is but has it been done in goa not yet anyway I don’t think it has been done in india also yet but one place where it has been done is US and in a place like silicon valley anything is possible for example in recent history youtube.com was founded in February 2005 and in less then 3 years was sold to Google for more then a billion dollar in Google cash and stock.

So the conclusion is if you target a global audience with your innovation then it is definitely possible to build a company worth a billion dollars in 3 years the vital factors to achieving the goal being innovation, usefulness and global audience but if you are building a small entity with focus on smaller geography then it is not possible unless maybe you start digging in your backyard and you strike oil or a diamond mine hahahahahaha :) as they say for striking it reach you don’t just require smart work but also a bit of luck :)

  • fritz Says -> facebook the 15 billion dollar social network

Yes facebook is valued at that much when microsoft picked up a 1.6 percent stake in facebook for $240 million it gave facebook the valuation of 15 billion read this for more info.

Well if this is not a sign of a bubble building then what is as far as investing $240 million in a company goes for Microsoft well it is no big deal for a company who is having close to $6.6 billion in cash reserves but the question remains why would microsoft give out such a huge amount for such a small stake in a company which does not have a solid business model yet the rumors floating around is that facebook is planning to monetize its user base by launching its own ad network. Well yes good that is very good but for how long can a social network claim they have a active user base well the normal trend now is where your friends move you move.

For example I was on hi5 then moved to orkut and now am very active on facebook and orkut.  I don’t even bother much to login to my hi5 account to check it as my friends are no longer active on that so what does facebook believe will not give another startup an opportunity  to come and swoop  all its users to their network  will facebook be able to maintain its user base after all it is a plain vanilla social network it is no  yahoo or google where there is not just one thing but many things that can be done with one id you get mail, social network, shopping etc etc yes facebook has opened their platform to third party developers but so are other networks.

I am really struggling to understand why Microsoft would value facebook so much when myspace is termed as the king of social networks and I recently read somewhere that it is valued at $10 billion  now when the market leader is valued at $10 billion and and upcoming star is valued at $15 billion based on factors like opening up the network to outside developers which other competitors can easily copy and are copying and opening to third party developers.

Well bubble or no it is good news for all tech entrepreneurs as it shows that the market is right for tech ideas and the VC’s are willing to invest in any ideas whether they are built on good business models or no.

As of now it looks like millions of users is more important then having a good business model

Zen Estilo - yep the one in which the couple is eloping from home I think it is humorous and something different for a car I still remember that fleur xavier one for tata indica wow that was a super duper ad a hot chick and good music (they had that lobo song "love you to want me" playing in that ad) that was a ad which got imprinted in the minds of people but I guess it didn’t do much for Tata Indica. But I wonder what happened to fleur xavier she was really hot and sizzling

Airtel-Google - The Airtel Google ad the Indiana Jones rip off for a story line is a great flick for anyone who understands the Indiana Jones series and the quest for knowledge that is emphasized in all of Indie’s adventures but for some reason I think this concept will be wasted on Indians who would feel that the ad is a bit odd but must say it is a bit lengthy but overall fun and something different. First time I saw the ad I thought it was a Indianna jones movie trailer :)

ulta perk - yep this ad is also good but here is what I find odd the dog chasing a postman is something that you associate in the US and not in India. For some reason I feel Like this might be a rip off from some foreign ad just like the Airtel-Google

Neo Sports India-Pakistan series - Yep this is the best ad out there right now first time I thought it was a public service ad for viewers to check their LPG gas stoves at home but the ad is good and well executed and passes a strong message to the viewers

Hcl Leaptop - Yep the one in the coffee shop one is good and hilarious the

  • fritz Says -> Would Google buy RIM ??

No No RIM is not Reliance India Mobile but the acronym for the Blackberry makers Research In Motion.

Just stumbled across (this) found it very very fascinating but would Google make such a purchase who knows but In my opinion don’t think so my reasons being the price tag is too big even for a company like Google with huge pile of cash and they can easily raise a bit more if needed to fund such a acquisition but will they be able to digest and integrate this into their offerings is what would be interesting to see if this does go through with the $54.13B price tag it can go more then that too.

Well with such an acquisition they would not just get a ready made hardware platform the blackberry but they also get a very important chunk of the corp clients who are users of the RIM platform so the only thing left for them would be integrating the hardware with their hosted applications for corporate domains and viola an enterprise class mobile collaboration suite and I guess that Google is bound to announce something huge since they have already taken their cash cow Adsense mobile so the Gphone is definitely on its way whether blackberry turns into a Gphone or there is another route Google will take only time will tell and their recent acquisition of zingku also shows their interest in the mobile space this is important for them in countries like India and China where the mobile penetration is more then PC penetration and they are definitely lagging in both this countries but so far Google’s mobile strategy has been a bit shaky am still wondering why they bought dodgeball some time back and their founders quit and left on an unhappy note with lot of media attention at their claims of how Google was not providing them with no resources to take the product further.

  • fritz Says -> online collaboration heating up
    12:08 am on October 4, 2007 | 0 Permalink | Reply
    Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Online collaboration space is all heating up with now the big players in this space being Zoho, Google with its hosted apps for your domain and now Microsoft with its latest announcements (this) of Office going Live. Well the others are not far behind even companies like AT&T (see this) and Cisco (see this) are trying to get into this space and not to forget even Intel is making a huge push into consumer internet with its investment arm Intel Capital providing funding to many consumer internet companies.

But out of all this players there is one player which is doing this with killer technology by its side and that is Adobe yes the new owners of the Flash platform now with all the pieces falling in place it looks like Macromedia was a killer deal for Adobe to inject new DNA into itself to become part of the innovation wave that is hitting the web now and Flash is paying a key part of it. With (this) announcement they have made it clear that they are taking part in the race and they do have the technology and the resources to win the race but will they be able to do it is the multi billion dollar question.

But The runner that will win in this might not be the one who owns the technology but the one that builds on top of it see this the company called communigate systems have built a flash client for collaborative groupware and the interface in the screenshots look killer and since Google is in the acquisition spree and so are many others this might be the perfect target for anyone who is looking at a very innovative way to get into this race with one acquisition and their management team looks good with loads of experience behind them so they will fit well in the bigger picture.

Out of all the big guns the one that I am very interested in is Adobe with the glimpses of what they have shown of what they are cooking in their labs it looks like a good place for lots of fun work going on now. For a very long time I have not seen anything fun reported or leaked from sources from Google labs.

The new adobe service share looks pretty impressive but the best review has been for the media player as that would be a perfect replacement for information devices on the go.
This is the holy grail of consumer and biz tech now finding the perfect online collaboration suite so that people people can work in a decentralized environment from multiple locations in the web 2.0 world. only time will tell who will become the winner but till the time comes niche players who are solving small problems in a innovative way of the bigger collaborative pie are good targets for acquisition. So If you are working on any nifty little project in the collaboration space or you come across something nice leave a comment.

  • fritz Says -> XML Internet OS is this the future?
    3:47 pm on October 2, 2007 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Came across (this) very interesting article on DDJ.

What is a XML Internet OS?
It is an operating system that uses XML as core component of its architecture whether it is for UI , or System level messaging or application logic containers basically it uses XML for everything and it is internet based because it can be used over the internet

It is just another one of those the web based operating system which everyone is talking about
but what caught my attention was the ability of it to be used in SAAS architecture this would be very very useful for biz environments for the end user a web OS with just the normal application stuff like email, messenger, rss reader, calendar etc is more then enough but for a biz environment you need more like integration with your CRM, ERP etc etc and this is where such an XML based Internet OS can be killer as it would be easy to integrate with your existing infrastructure with a little bit of hassle.

There is a rumor floating around for a long time now that Google is working on a web based OS well one thing to be assured is it will come with email, rss, social networking, calendar etc etc but till that comes it will just be a rumor nothing more then that.

But till there is a one full fledged web OS available I guess it is good to learn and follow all the news coming from that space and the XML Internet OS by Xcerion looks like an interesting piece of technology to see whats under the hood and who knows they might be bought by Google after all their product seems to be good and integrating it will Google offerings will make it killer and who knows a little bit of Ubuntu for bootstrapping your PC and then loading Firefox and thats it you are logged in to a central OS with all your normal applications there and Google has the capacity to do this if someone can come up with something like this well it will put a serious dent in Microsoft’s desktop OS market share.

This can be the future secure environment like Ubuntu then you have a secure browser Firefox and then you are just left at the insecurities of the app that you use and not worry about the other insecurities that creep in at all the levels of the normal OS for the Desktop architecture. Well the biggest losers in this architecture would be the anti virus companies etc as they would be left with no market for their products as far as viruses go well there have been quite a few web 2.0 viruses that have been seen in the wild. So this people will just have to change their product offerings I guess to be on demand virus scanning maybe form like a layer between the Web OS and the third party application provider. Well this is a challenging area lots of opportunities for anyone who wants to take them.

  • fritz Says -> the wild hunt for second success for a desi serial entrepreneur
    1:10 am on October 1, 2007 | 0 Permalink | Reply
    Tags: , , , , , , ,

Whenever I think about the term serial entrepreneur The names that come to my mind from the tech industry are paypal founders, the kazaa founders and our very own desi Sabeer Bhatia.

For all those who dont know much about the paypal founders after their successful exit some of the paypal employees got involved with many other ventures and most of them did cash out for example youtube etc are paypal alumni and also the widgets that are so popular on facebook like slide etc are powered by one of the co founders of paypal new startup.
The kazaa guys went on to found skype which they sold for a huge sum to ebay and now they have set their sights on joost a new internet based p2p Tv platform which itself has raised closed to 50 million $ in funding so far .

Where as this serial entrepreneurs have tasted success on some of their other ventures our very own desi serial entrepreneur in search of the second success is struggling and boy is he struggling badly his venture arzoo went down and has now come up in its new avatar as a travel portal also his vision for a nano city looks a bit odd to me but then again what do I know of nano technology ( I am assuming that is the technology that will be worked on at the nano park) also came across (this) very interesting article and what caught my attention was the fact tht Mr Bhatia thinking that he can build a google out of one of the 7 companies that he has invested in WOW why just one of them and not all is my question to him?

I had my doubts whether Sabeer can deliver a successful venture on his own but now as time goes by it looks like it will be difficult for him to do that and it also looks like the team at hotmail was what made hotmail a success and without that team he wont be able to build another success story but till then I guess he will be taking a bit out of his savings from his share of the pie which he carved out for himself after the 400 million $ sale of hotmail to Microsoft.

I guess the hunt for the taste of another success story can make a person restless and make them do crazy things but I believe that if a person sticks to the basics and goes back to the drawing board and thinks of problems and experiences them first hand then you can always taste success again but it might not be as big as you expect of it but sometimes if u hunt for bigger success you loose on small success which can later on lead to bigger ones.

Well all I can say is Sabeer if you are reading this maybe you should invest in my startup it wont be the next Google but can assure you that you will get good returns and not loose money. Well if you do read the article you will see that he plans to launch ice creams for lactose intolerants in India and also maybe open up a hotel for pets ( yes a hotel for your pets) well lactose intolerants might work but the market is small but hotel for pets well that is what might give a tough fight to the hilton or marriots chain of hotel I guess hahahahaha.

So should a entrepreneur search for a second success story a definite yes but like I said they should go back to the drawing board themselves and come up with the idea

  • fritz Says -> navigating the social networking jungle

The social networks that I am currently part of are hi5,orkut,zebo and now facebook and I get invites for more and more like bigadda etc etc but am quite fedup and joined facebook recently after joining all I can say is well just another social networking site with a slight difference.

I was introduced to the world of social networking with the hi5 network and it was fun at that time to keep in touch with your friends then it started getting very very slow and then you saw the banner ads coming in and then constant server outage and at that point was fed up of it and then moved onto orkut and has been happy on that since joined on the zebo network since it belonged to a friend and was trying to promote it a bit (kinda like doing my part in helping a buddy) but recently with all the noise in the blogosphere and media about facebook and its wild wild 10 billion dollar evaluation finally i joined it to see what is it all about.

In short what I can say about facebook is too many attention grabbing elements on your profile which keep you distracted from one purpose that a social networking site serves and that is too connect with friends and like minded people. Am still happy with orkut and plan to stick to that and also be a bit active on facebook and see where it goes the rumors floating are that orkut will also be opening up their platform to third party developers well I guess at that point of time they will also become like facebook but till that time comes they will offer a much cleaner and better utility to connect to your peers.

Out of all I would say orkut is the one that is good and once they open up the api to outside world I guess they will grow a bit faster but what would really be good is if somehow google were able to convert gmail into a social networking app they have done it with integration of gtalk in the email client but in my opinion if gmail or yahoo or hotmail can offer the added layers ontop of the basic communication layer that an email app provides without hampering the communication layer then that has the potential to be the biggest social network ever.

Don’t forget you can go by for a few days without logging into a social network but you cant let a day go by without logging into your email account and till now that has been the primary source along with IM to stay in touch with your friends. Well if someone is listening then this is a million dollar idea Wink

    yahoo rediff deal

Yes yesterday noticed one thing when a friend logged into his email account at yahoo at the top left area in the window there was a window which caught my attention the picture of it is given above it said check other mail and there it should http://www.rediffmail.com so any a very very curious techie I clicked on the link to see what surprise was in store for me it took me to the mail accounts page and there was a message shown which said unfortunately there was a problem
the image is given below of the message

error while acessing rediff from yahoo mail

I am totally perplexed so once my friends account was logged off from I logged in to my yahoo account and that box was not there for me and no my friend is not a premium yahoo mail user he is a free account user like me.
Is there something that I am missing here are yahoo and rediffmail working on integrating their mail offerings and allowing people to migrate their email accounts to and fro or will both offer a interface with which you can access both your mailboxes from a single login to any of the vendors site if there is a deal in the offering well that will be a big big boost for rediff

Search on google for yahoo rediffmail threw up one of this as a result this says that yahoo and rediff have a strategic alliance to jointly promote online shopping and mobile content across both portals but now maybe that has grown from just the shopping and mobile content to their mail offerings too.
