For the past couple of days there is only one question on my mind is it possible to build a company worth 1 billion dollar in 3 years yes 36 months now don’t ask me how I got the magic numbers of 1 billion or 3 years but I guess the reason for such crazy questions going in my mind are the number of interviews I see on TV of entrepreneurs and new generation of business leaders in the making taking over family run businesses in India after their studies saying that their targets are to take their family businesses past the 1 billion dollar mark and make the business more professionally managed and not family run.

Hmm all this has certainly got me thinking is it possible to build a company in a small place like goa worth a billion dollars in 3 years well maybe it is but has it been done in goa not yet anyway I don’t think it has been done in india also yet but one place where it has been done is US and in a place like silicon valley anything is possible for example in recent history youtube.com was founded in February 2005 and in less then 3 years was sold to Google for more then a billion dollar in Google cash and stock.

So the conclusion is if you target a global audience with your innovation then it is definitely possible to build a company worth a billion dollars in 3 years the vital factors to achieving the goal being innovation, usefulness and global audience but if you are building a small entity with focus on smaller geography then it is not possible unless maybe you start digging in your backyard and you strike oil or a diamond mine hahahahahaha :) as they say for striking it reach you don’t just require smart work but also a bit of luck :)

For all you who are wondering what is this post about well this post is about Mukesh Ambani’s proposed new residence in bombay called Antilia.

Well I personally don’t own a residence of my own yet but will do so someday :)
but I do follow a lot of this residential luxuries of famous people whether they are shown on forbes mag or on MTV Cribs yes I watch cribs because looking at those houses you learn what are the things you need to get for your crib when it is up.

Well for a sneak peek at the proposed 4000+ crore residence of reliance CMD mukesh ambani the pic is given below of what the proposed architecture might look like once complete more details can be seen here in short it is

    • 27 storeyed
    • 6 floors for parking of 168 imported cars
    • one floor for an inhouse car service center
    • entertainment floor with a mini theatre with sitting capacity of 50 (looks like the rich guy does not have many friends hahahaha)
    • health floor with swimming pool and facilities for athletics
    • for visiting guests there will be 2 floors wow does this mean now all the visiting dignitaries of reliance be staying there instead of a hotel somewhere ?
    • 600 staff will be working there
    • three helipads on the terrace

Way to go man what a place to stay hats off to you for that you should work hard and also stay in luxury and party hard after reaping in the rewards and finally the Indian Businessmen are realising it with the huge number of private jets being purchased, expensive imported cars, luxury apartments etc etc it is a good sign for a booming economy.

This residence will go well with his new flying office worth 245 crores see (this) for more info. Wow I am just imagining what the other ambani brother is doing who is keeping a low profile with all this big ticket spendings by elder brother well its not that he does not have the money but then again he does not have as much as his elder brother hahahaha

Well it will take some serious spending by another Indian to belittle Mukesh’s crib in India but hey it can be done even though I would say all this are the things that even I look for in a crib but there are more facilities and a hell of a lot of cutting edge tech inside and outside.
my crib so now you know the list of luxuries that I want to own someday is not just restricted to a private island and private jet for my world travels for holidays, partying and cuisine tasting hey who wouldn’t want to just board their plane and go to italy and have a pizza and come when in the mood rather then settling for a domino’s or pizza hut one :)

Realistically(as reality sinks in sob sob sob) speaking at present I need a single bedroom apartment of my own and a small office to work on my building empire dreams :)

Hmm am wondering why name a residence after a mythical island ?? any ideas y ????

Yep a car like (this) would be perfect for me down here in Goa even though there are bit of concerns about it just going 125 miles on a charge that is roughly 200 km well for a small place like Goa it would be perfect for me to get around the only thing that will have to change is the color though Wink as it has to have some sort of shade of blue but even this is color is cool enough for a guy whose name is D’souza Fritz D’souza

Oh if it can come with all the necessary cool gadgets and must haves like a missile launcher, a GPS tracking unit, a beer chiller,a nice music system, a TV with a satellite dish ya ya this is a lot to ask even without this gadgets the car is good to look at and also a technological marvel in a way I guess so a must have anyway once it hits the market and you don’t have to move around a lot on one charge for your vehicle I guess this vehicles would pick up and go mainstream if they could be recharged fast like even if it goes 200 km but if you could recharge the vehicle in say 5 minutes for another 200 km that would be perfect as then instead of gas stations you will see electric charging stations within the radius of 200 km.

Well this one is by Subaru and Nissan is also coming out with one but I wonder if there is any indian company other then Reva working on something like this as tata’s are too busy working on their 1 lakh Rs wonder car which I am very very anxious too see.

(image is linked from cnet site see the above linked article for more details about the car)

  • fritz Says -> why intel why??

Intel has silently launched a new product no no it is not a new chip or a server or a gadget but a website yes yes a php based website that they have launched you can see it here. BTW the coolsw in the name of the site is for cool software and it is a digg clone for submitting upcoming software applications but the question which everyone is asking is why did Intel do this site?? yes were they bored from all their hardware adventures that they needed a small laugh so they went ahead and said lets create a niche version of digg and see if it gets a better evaluation then our entire biz maybe it will since we are heading towards a bubble. But I guess the investors wont be laughing at this and will seriously take note of why such a venture came into existence and why is it having the Intel stamp all over it as if this venture fails it will take down a bit of the value from the Intel brand.

Well I still remember that once Intel was criticized for getting into consumer electronics space with their digital cameras and microscope for kids but even this offerings didn’t divert much from intel’s core competence which is hardware and internals of systems but this totally beats me lets wait and watch they might have more such ventures to hit the market in the future only time will tell. Well if you ask me this wont last long as this category is also there on digg so why would someone come to this site and not go to digg? beats me but maybe Intel knows why Wink

  • fritz Says -> gold rush for alternative source of fuel

Well the global fuel market is worth trillion dollars yep that is what some of the VC’s are claiming and I guess they are right and fuel affects every aspect of our life one way or another.
The VC’s are not just crazy about alternate source of fuel they are in the hunt of clean fuel and which is also renewable. So lots of VC funds are pumped into this technologies right now there are various research being carried out in this issues and how we can achieve clean renewable source of fuel.

Well (this) is a good place to know a bit about how most of the money is being spent on ethanol and the other segment which attracts equal interest and investment is solar energy.
I used to be interested a lot in solar energy a lot when I was young and didn’t have the scientific know how on how the solar panels worked those small solar powerered calculators were a big mystery to me and kept me involved for quite some time have broken a few of them too to see the shiny display panels the enthusiasm lasted till I learnt about it and that is when I lost interest why you ask? Well it was simple you could not do much with it thats why it was good for small small projects and you could not do anything large scale with it and plus once realized the space constraints and how it impacted the power generating capability and also a few other shortcomings.

The other research which has caught my fancy is the ethanol space now that is something that I might be able to do something in am looking at the opportunities on how I can be a part of this revolution. I feel the energy crisis might be better averted if we can perfect the cold fusion technology and that would give us enough energy not to worry about anything but then again we should see that all this energy which is getting created should not go into creating a whole different problem of pollution and global warming that is why For the sake of everyone and the future generations I hope some one finds a good cheap, clean and renewable source of energy or as I would call it someone should achieve the 3 C’s (clean, cheap and continuous) in their product for the good of all of us in the long run.

  • fritz Says -> Would Google buy RIM ??

No No RIM is not Reliance India Mobile but the acronym for the Blackberry makers Research In Motion.

Just stumbled across (this) found it very very fascinating but would Google make such a purchase who knows but In my opinion don’t think so my reasons being the price tag is too big even for a company like Google with huge pile of cash and they can easily raise a bit more if needed to fund such a acquisition but will they be able to digest and integrate this into their offerings is what would be interesting to see if this does go through with the $54.13B price tag it can go more then that too.

Well with such an acquisition they would not just get a ready made hardware platform the blackberry but they also get a very important chunk of the corp clients who are users of the RIM platform so the only thing left for them would be integrating the hardware with their hosted applications for corporate domains and viola an enterprise class mobile collaboration suite and I guess that Google is bound to announce something huge since they have already taken their cash cow Adsense mobile so the Gphone is definitely on its way whether blackberry turns into a Gphone or there is another route Google will take only time will tell and their recent acquisition of zingku also shows their interest in the mobile space this is important for them in countries like India and China where the mobile penetration is more then PC penetration and they are definitely lagging in both this countries but so far Google’s mobile strategy has been a bit shaky am still wondering why they bought dodgeball some time back and their founders quit and left on an unhappy note with lot of media attention at their claims of how Google was not providing them with no resources to take the product further.

  • fritz Says -> online collaboration heating up

    Tags: , , , , , idea, , , , , ,

Online collaboration space is all heating up with now the big players in this space being Zoho, Google with its hosted apps for your domain and now Microsoft with its latest announcements (this) of Office going Live. Well the others are not far behind even companies like AT&T (see this) and Cisco (see this) are trying to get into this space and not to forget even Intel is making a huge push into consumer internet with its investment arm Intel Capital providing funding to many consumer internet companies.

But out of all this players there is one player which is doing this with killer technology by its side and that is Adobe yes the new owners of the Flash platform now with all the pieces falling in place it looks like Macromedia was a killer deal for Adobe to inject new DNA into itself to become part of the innovation wave that is hitting the web now and Flash is paying a key part of it. With (this) announcement they have made it clear that they are taking part in the race and they do have the technology and the resources to win the race but will they be able to do it is the multi billion dollar question.

But The runner that will win in this might not be the one who owns the technology but the one that builds on top of it see this the company called communigate systems have built a flash client for collaborative groupware and the interface in the screenshots look killer and since Google is in the acquisition spree and so are many others this might be the perfect target for anyone who is looking at a very innovative way to get into this race with one acquisition and their management team looks good with loads of experience behind them so they will fit well in the bigger picture.

Out of all the big guns the one that I am very interested in is Adobe with the glimpses of what they have shown of what they are cooking in their labs it looks like a good place for lots of fun work going on now. For a very long time I have not seen anything fun reported or leaked from sources from Google labs.

The new adobe service share looks pretty impressive but the best review has been for the media player as that would be a perfect replacement for information devices on the go.
This is the holy grail of consumer and biz tech now finding the perfect online collaboration suite so that people people can work in a decentralized environment from multiple locations in the web 2.0 world. only time will tell who will become the winner but till the time comes niche players who are solving small problems in a innovative way of the bigger collaborative pie are good targets for acquisition. So If you are working on any nifty little project in the collaboration space or you come across something nice leave a comment.

  • fritz Says -> scrabble goes online and is very addictive try it out

Well as children am sure most of us have played scrabble with our siblings and parents well if I certainly did and also with one of my uncle who used to cheat and make up words which were not there at all in the english dictionary.

Well today came across scrabulous and online scrabble game developed by two indian brothers well first of all the game is highly addictive. I signed up for it the sign up process is a bit troublesome there is Ajax used but not to its web 2.0 potential but after that just entered a game and created a table and was soon joined by a fellow player for a game it was nice but then I wanted more but then again I had to get back to work so could not play but will head there anytime I want break from my work and some exercise to challenge my grey cells.

Scrabulous is a venture undertaken by two brothers they are claiming that they have 5 million page views a month which is remarkable and the brothers do plan to launch the game in many international versions and also adding more games to their offering. well good luck to them it is a great offering and I think they are cool enough to pull off more success stories in online gaming space. the website is built on php and the actual game is built as a java applet this is what i didn’t like it was a flash widget then it would have been good but java applets now are considered to be irritating but then again am sure they must be making plans to migrate it to either a pure ajax app or a flash based one. The site also has a basic social networking features like buddy list etc but overall it is a great game and very innovative it is good to see young Indians like this keeping the innovation alive and now as they have released this as a facebook app they will be reaching a much bigger target audience which is good for them.

Do try it out if you liked scrabble am sure you will like this online avatar of the game. am waiting to see what more good games the brothers can come up with one of them is still in college and is 21 years old.

  • fritz Says -> XML Internet OS is this the future?
    3:47 pm on October 2, 2007 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Came across (this) very interesting article on DDJ.

What is a XML Internet OS?
It is an operating system that uses XML as core component of its architecture whether it is for UI , or System level messaging or application logic containers basically it uses XML for everything and it is internet based because it can be used over the internet

It is just another one of those the web based operating system which everyone is talking about
but what caught my attention was the ability of it to be used in SAAS architecture this would be very very useful for biz environments for the end user a web OS with just the normal application stuff like email, messenger, rss reader, calendar etc is more then enough but for a biz environment you need more like integration with your CRM, ERP etc etc and this is where such an XML based Internet OS can be killer as it would be easy to integrate with your existing infrastructure with a little bit of hassle.

There is a rumor floating around for a long time now that Google is working on a web based OS well one thing to be assured is it will come with email, rss, social networking, calendar etc etc but till that comes it will just be a rumor nothing more then that.

But till there is a one full fledged web OS available I guess it is good to learn and follow all the news coming from that space and the XML Internet OS by Xcerion looks like an interesting piece of technology to see whats under the hood and who knows they might be bought by Google after all their product seems to be good and integrating it will Google offerings will make it killer and who knows a little bit of Ubuntu for bootstrapping your PC and then loading Firefox and thats it you are logged in to a central OS with all your normal applications there and Google has the capacity to do this if someone can come up with something like this well it will put a serious dent in Microsoft’s desktop OS market share.

This can be the future secure environment like Ubuntu then you have a secure browser Firefox and then you are just left at the insecurities of the app that you use and not worry about the other insecurities that creep in at all the levels of the normal OS for the Desktop architecture. Well the biggest losers in this architecture would be the anti virus companies etc as they would be left with no market for their products as far as viruses go well there have been quite a few web 2.0 viruses that have been seen in the wild. So this people will just have to change their product offerings I guess to be on demand virus scanning maybe form like a layer between the Web OS and the third party application provider. Well this is a challenging area lots of opportunities for anyone who wants to take them.

  • fritz Says -> startup pains release 0.1- first step after an idea hits you

    Tags: , , , , idea, , , ,

Once you have a idea which you think will revolutionize something and if you have self belief that you can make that idea come alive this is exactly how the road to entrepreneurship begins it is one tiring road with unexpected twists and turns and sometimes the odds will be against you with no end in sight and at certain points of the journey you feel like everything is falling apart but a good navigator for a startup is none other the the original entrepreneur the one who can hold his head high and walk the road and knows where he has to stop and also knows what exactly is the final stop for this journey if there is no final stop then you know that it is not the road worth taking.

Since I have decided to take the walk down the startup road I will be blogging about my journey on my blog in the startup pains series of posts. The points will be what are the problems faced and how I came across those and what solutions worked for me etc etc so as I get time to take a breather while on the journey will try to update this series.

Well the Idea for my own startup in the form of an incubation center for some of my ideas came to me one year back and then I got to work on the basic plan on how I would go about setting up my small startup in goa. Since I am working in a senior position in an IT company in goa called Intelgrate I got to know the operational issues and resource problems that a normal IT setup in goa has and since I wanted to do something different and go into products rather then services. Services is a normal trend for all the IT related companies in goa. I was in a bigger problem then the other firms as I would not be competing with them for market share or their client
